So you have just brought a new puppy or kitten into your family. Congratulations! Now you are probably wondering what is next and preparing for your first visit to the veterinarian’s office. If you are new to the Hiawatha area or a new pet owner, contact our veterinarians at NEK Veterinary Services so we can walk you through everything that you need to know. Here are a few things that you can expect from your first visit with a veterinarian.
Taking a History
In general, the first thing the veterinarian or vet tech will do is ask some questions about your puppy or kitten’s background. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect. We just need to know any relevant information so we can provide the best care possible. If you have any veterinary records from before you owned your puppy or kitten, such as records from a shelter or a breeder, be sure to bring them along.
Next, the veterinarian will perform a physical exam. This can also vary a bit depending on the circumstances and how your pet responds, but usually, the veterinarian will check your pet’s eyes, ears, and teeth. We will also check for vital signs, such as temperature and respiration, and will likely palpate your pet’s abdomen and test the joints to check for any problems. The veterinarian may also ask you to bring along a fecal sample to test for parasites, and we may draw some blood if there is any concern your pet has been exposed to certain viruses or has other health issues.
Creating a Care Plan
During your pet’s first vet visit, there is a good chance the veterinarian will also recommend starting routine vaccinations. These are particularly important if you have a young puppy or kitten since young animals are more susceptible to many common diseases. The vet may offer to provide some of the vaccinations during the visit. In addition to a vaccination schedule, other services such as microchipping, spay or neuter surgery, and preventive care for fleas, ticks, and heartworms should be considered.
