What kinds of surgeries are available for pets?

Like people, pets can have any number of surgical procedures to include tumor removal, fracture repair, surgery to remove a foreign object or stop internal bleeding, dental extraction, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, spay and neuter surgery, and more. Our Hiawatha veterinarian has ample experience with these and other types of surgery that can help improve your pet’s health or even save their life.

Why is spay and neuter surgery important?
Spay and neuter procedures prevent unwanted pregnancies to reduce the number of stray cats and dogs on the street or in animal shelters. At the same time, these surgeries protect your pet against reproductive cancers and infections to prolong its life. Our animal hospital offers safe and effective spay and neuter surgery for your dog or cat.
What is a pre-surgical pet care exam and blood testing?
Before scheduling surgery, our Hiawatha veterinarian will examine your pet to ensure it’s in good enough health for surgery. We’ll review your pet’s health history, perform a physical exam and run blood tests to see if it has health issues that could impact the surgery or recovery. If so, these issues will need to be resolved before your pet can have surgery.
Is the anesthesia used for surgery safe for my pet?
Our surgical team will monitor your pet carefully while it’s under anesthesia to ensure there are no problems during surgery. We’ll also have someone on hand to handle issues that may arise to safeguard your pet’s health. Your pet will be given pain medication and a sedative before surgery to keep him comfortable and still during his procedure.
What does my pet need for post-op care?
Whether your pet has had spay and neuter surgery, orthopedic surgery, or general surgery, we’ll provide complete instructions for his post-op care. We recommend setting up a quiet, comfortable spot in your home for your pet’s recovery. Encourage your pet to rest to promote healing. We’ll provide medication to help manage your pet’s pain and monitor his recovery until he is fully healed.
