Tips for Camping With Pets
Is there anything better than sitting by a bonfire with your furry friend and taking in the starry night sky? While camping with your pet is a terrific way to have exciting adventures together, you must ensure their safety. To protect your pet’s safety when camping, use the advice from our team.
#1: Perform a tent trial run before camping with your pet
If this is your pet’s first camping trip, take them on a practice run in your backyard to help them get used to the tent. To help your pet become used to the smell, texture, and sounds of your tent, set up your tent and allow your pet sniff, lick, and explore it. Reward your pet for being brave and venturing outside the tent rather than forcing them inside.
#2: Ensure your pet is visible
Lack of electricity makes it difficult to see at night, especially if your pet has dark-colored fur. Use a luminous collar or harness at night, or get an LED collar for your pet to wear, to make sure they are easy to spot.
Make your pet extremely noticeable while trekking throughout the day by using neon colors. If your pet wanders off, a bright orange collar or vest can help you locate them.
#3: Study up on pet first aid
When camping, your four-legged friend can tumble down a hill, run across a thorn, or encounter a nest of stinging insects. If you’re in remote wilderness, you need to be proficient in pet first aid to stabilize your pet’s condition so you can head to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital for treatment.
#4: Schedule a veterinary visit
Be sure your pet is prepared for a wilderness experience before setting up your tent at your campsite. In addition to your pet’s core vaccinations, leptospirosis and Lyme disease vaccinations may be advised. Leptospirosis is a disease spread by wildlife urine. It’s also advisable to take precautions against mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas before going outside.
Whether your pet needs urgent care after getting tangled in thorny brush or requires updated vaccinations and parasite prevention before your outdoor adventure, our team is here for you. Give us a call to schedule an appointment.
